The Sojourner's Diary: SUN-KISSED CHILD

The Sojourner's Diary: SUN-KISSED CHILD

I remember back in secondary school, whenever there was an albino kid in a class, he or she became the subject of taunts. Everything about them got mocked; from their skin, to their eyes and their freckles and spots. They get mocked for how red their skins go from being sun burned. Most of these kids morph into adulthood without ever really leaving infancy. The constant destruction of their self esteem at childhood follows them into life and some never leave their shells.
A few days ago, while on a bike to somewhere in Lokoja, I caught glimpse of a beautiful albino girl in her mum or aunt's stall I presume, seating under the table where goods were arranged. She looked so sad and yet so beautiful. She inspired this:

SUN-KISSED CHILD
She had the right curves in the right places
But if given the chance, she'd be ready to trade places
To have any one of these normal faces
So she wouldn't have to battle with the glances
That everyone sent her way when she went out to play
Growing up she never had the right words to say
Alone and depressed, her heart grew empty day by day
She never believed she could be could be loved
How could she?
She was an abomination!
There were songs about the White girl magic
Poems about the black girl's strength and beauty
Tales of brown skin girls
But her skin was pale as a worthless pearl
So she buried herself deep in her shell
Where no one would see her
But she forgets
She forgets she bears a flawless coating of flesh
And in her, beauty is enmeshed
Everytime her eyes open, stars stare in awe
And her mind is just as beautiful and as unique as any other
So the next time you hear I love you,
Believe you deserve it
Not out of pity
But of absolute certainty
That you're beautiful in every way
And the next time a nasty child tries to bring you down
Look them straight in the eyes and tell them God took his time when he made you
That's why you're too perfect to be tainted by color
Tell them you're the true definition of anti racism
Tell them you're a queen and tell them you're a king
Tell them you're a warrior and let your soul sing
Sun-kissed child, you're not invisible
We see you and everything you go through
And one day the world will see too
That God took his time when he made you
Sun-kissed child
You're not what the world has tried to paint you to be
In fact, you're way bigger!
Your freckles, spots and glistening skin
Is everything a perfect piece of art is supposed to be
I'll be your voice till the world gets to see too
That God took his time when he made you.

Till our next journey together dear Sojourner. Live, love, laugh, repeat. Remember showing love is always easier than giving hate.
