The Sojourner's Diary: ALMA GEMELA

The Spanish word for soul mate stands for "alma gemela". You know, I've always wondered. It has always had me bothered. That question. Simple as it may sound, it is a question that has troubled my mind relentlessly. How many soul mates do we get in a lifetime? 

Have you ever met someone and out of the blue, y'all connect and a bond is forged? You spend moments together and moments turn into hours, hours into days, days into weeks and weeks into months and months into years, years into more years, you get the picture.

Everything is fine is the beginning and then the misunderstandings begin and then you start to see how different y'all really are and then your three hours of calls become three minutes of awkwardness with so many words in your minds but none of them said. You then start to wonder, "was this really my soulmate or did I get it all wrong?" Are we even meant to be together? Eventually, you start to let each other go and slowly ease into strangers and then one day, it all comes crashing down and ding ding ding, the end... 

But you guys were so perfect together! What happened? Thought she was your soulmate. And slowly but surely, you eventually start to heal and you move on and then meet someone else. Your guard comes up and then you put up protective shields to guard your heart until eventually he breaks it down. You let him in. He allows you in. A bond is forged. The story restarts. Another soulmate. So, how many soul mates do we get in a lifetime? 

I can completely understand how you feel. Been there, done that, still might. It doesn't necessarily mean love is impossible or there are never really soul mates at least not in the way you think they might be; two people destined to be together. I believe, we can get a million soul mates in a lifetime. I believe a soul mate isn't just a lover or a friend or a perfect partner, I believe a soul mate is person that at different points in your lifetime pops up at the perfect moment and ultimately synchs with your persona and eventually help you through that part of your time on earth. 

So yeah, I know how much you thought, this time it had to be true love and had to have been written in the stars but there aren't any perfect matches anywhere, there aren't any soul mates in the way you might think they should exist, but there are friends and there are lovers who work on building long lasting relationships and if eventually these buildings do not reach their completion, it doesn't imply the unreality of love, it shows its a conscious effort not some predestined plan orchestrated by a spiritual force. 

So how many soul mates do we get in a lifetime? A million? How many lovers do we get in a lifetime? A billion? The real question is, how many "yous" do you get in a lifetime? Just one? Try to live then in the present not holding on to a bitter past.
