ALKALI AMANA’S BOARD: REVOLUTION NOW

Revolution Now

The question keeps demanding an answer and I can't get it to leave my thoughts.

"Can we die for Nigeria?"

Sequel to it are more -

Ready or not, can we put ourselves in front batons, guns, handcuffs?

Can we march as one in solidarity, unity and purpose?

Can we raise one voice and cry 'Ubuntu'?

When we begin to answer these questions consciously and with effort, we shall begin to see the change we desire. Great nations were built on the shoulders, sweat and blood of citizens who were fearless enough to confront corruption in its human form. In front of guns and security bulldogs, they marched. Threatened, they persevered. When killed, they doubled in number. When pushed back, they advanced with their souls. When denied, they resorted to the other different ways to kill a rat.  They were citizens that knew that it would take sacrifice to get somewhere better in the future. They also knew that whereas they may not enjoy what they were fighting for, their children will grow to take the reins of society, so they fought for something better. United States gained independence through a revolution. France has had its fair shares of revolutions to become what it is. Egyptians pressed on until they kicked Mubarak out of his palace. They all made sacrifices.

What stops our revolution in Nigeria? I have considered the different angles to this questions and three things stand out in particular for me -

1. Religion/ethnicity

2. Fear (Please listen to 'Sorrow, Tears and Blood' by Fela Kuti)

3. Greed

In subsequent episodes, I will speak on each of the above mentioned points. Nonetheless, I must comment on how heavy their bearing on this country is, especially number two. It is disheartening to think that we grant the people we gave our mandate to the power to toss us about as they wish. We sit comfortably and watch a lot go awry because Napoleon's dogs look scary, but we forget that those dogs are just animals with conditioned reasoning. We fear physical hits and bruises but live without knowing the dearth of what is done to us otherwise constantly.

It is baffling to see that we want a revolution but we refuse to be the solution. Until we are able to answer, individually, certain questions as the ones above, we shall be unable to lead a front for change.

Arise O'compatriots...

Have a great week!
