ALKALI AMANA’S BOARD: UNTOLD STORIES

CORONA: UNTOLD STORIES

Currently, I am writing a short story series on the corona virus situation and the lockdown effects on people. This is the 12th episode. For more, please check my facebook page @alkaliamana or my twitter handle with the same name. Enjoy!

The heat was too much to handle and it made Enemaku turn on his bed again and again as he sought some breeze to cool off. What's worse? Periodically, he suffered the droning sounds of mosquitoes zooming past his ear. He almost slapped himself at his last attempt to kill one of such mosquitoes.  He sat up, tired and frustrated, not knowing what to do. He grabbed his phone. It was 01:34am. His frustration grew and he hated his room. Sweat trickled down his body and he made for the bathroom. His temperature was rising, he noticed after cleaning his body. It usually happened when he didn't sleep enough. He shifted his bed to one of the two windows in his self-contained apartment and hoped for a respite from there. None came, until 4am when he slept to the cool of the morning.

His temperature was worse when he woke up and he felt feverish. He had a long day ahead of him. Without doubt, he hated what the mosquitoes did to him and he would get a room spray when coming back in the evening. He hated it when he could not get enough sleep, more so, with mosquitoes feasting on his blood. He was afraid he would get malaria. After going to the bank, he would visit a pharmacy.

He approached the bank and stood at the gate as the security man raised his testing device to his head. It was a precautionary measure to detect a possible case of Corona virus, according to the bank. He didn't agree with them though. He only hoped his temperature was not beyond normal. It took almost a minute before the machine bleeped a certain number of times.

"People come o. Corona virus o" The security man shouted and started running away from him. Obviously, his temperature was high at the moment, but it wasn't corona virus, he was sure. "Young man, stay outside" a firm voice ordered as four security men approached him, masks and gloves making them look like pallbearers. They requested him to leave the premises and began pushing him away. What nonsense, he thought as he got fed up. He began rubbing and hugging them, making his way into the bank as they ran away. The hunter was now hunted. As he came, they ran from him like he was corona itself.

He only stopped when they agreed to run his deposit and allowed him to tell them the symptoms of corona virus "By the way, I follow no sleep well for night" he shouted as he walked away from the building.

Stay safe and active. Keep social distancing and wash your hands always.

Have a great week!
