Hello world, welcome to OFFSIDE WITH JEROME. Ramadan Kareem to my Muslim brothers this episode focuses on a quick preview to two of the major tournaments on display this summer:

COPA America 2019
AFCON 2019

A big chunk of the biggest stars in the football world are South Americans hence the buzz around the COPA America; a football tournament for the national teams of from the region. This year’s edition is the 46th edition and will be hosted by Brazil.

Of the teams participating in the tourney include, defending champions Chile, heavyweights Argentina and Brazil as well as the tournament’s most successful team Uruguay amongst others and the tournament will kick start on the 14th of June and will be on show through to the 7th of July. All group games will have been played by the 24th of June while the knockouts will begin on the 27th of June after a 3 day break.

In the tournament this year there are 10 regular South American teams while there are 2 teams from Asia invited to take part in the tournament this years and they’re Japan and Qatar and represents the first Copa America not to feature any CONCACAF (North American) team since teams were first invited.

This year’s Copa promises to be a spectacle as it will feature several big name players including the likes of Neymar Jr, Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez, Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez, amongst a host of others.

If the Copa America is revered for the number of superstars on showcase then the 2019 AFCON in Egypt boasts the hosting of one of the most star studded tournaments in recent times with Big names spread across several teams it promises to be a spectacle in Egypt.

Pundits have had varied opinions on teams regarded as favourites but generally the favourites claim can rest on one of Hosts Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, and Nigeria while defending champions Cameroon, Ghana , and Algeria cannot be written off. This year’s AFCON the 32nd edition has been expanded to accommodate 24 teams hence increasing opportunities for some minnows such as Madagascar and Burundi to make their debut appearances in the tournament history.

The group stage games will begin on the 21st of June while the final will be contested in Cairo on the 19th of July. Super stars set to feature in the tournament among others include Mohammed Sallah (Egypt), Sadio Mane (Senegal), Riyad Mahrez (Algeria), Wilfred Ndidi (Nigeria), Wilfred zaha (Ivory Coast), Kalidou koulibaly (Senegal), Andre Ayew (Ghana), Hakim Ziyech (Morocco).
