Watching the television, or peering at a phone with a bright screen, in a dark room, is not advisable, especially for people that are long sighted.

Why? It may trigger an acute glaucoma attack-- an eye emergency that may lead to blindness within minutes to hours, if proper and timely intervention is not given.

How? In a dark room, with a TV  or the screen of a bright phone the only source of light, the pupils dilate excessively. In this state, they may come in contact with the lens, and block the channel through which excessive fluid leaves the eyes.

With this "pupillary block," excessive fluid accumulates, acutely raising the pressure inside the eye, damaging the optic nerve-- the nerve of vision. The eye turns red and becomes painful. Severe headache and vomiting ensues. The cornea becomes cloudy, vision becomes blurry, and blindness follows suit in minutes to hours, without prompt intervention.

This could happen to anyone, but the people who are more at risk are those with long sightedness, because there eyeballs are shorter, and there irido-corneal angle could therefore be ocluded more easily. Having another source of light on while watching a TV, no matter how dim, would go a long way to minimize the risk of having an acute glaucoma attack by this particular mechanism.

Now you know, so Protect your Eyes😎
