TUESDAY TALKS WITH GBEMI: Know Your Rights

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!!! (PART 1)

Hello guys, welcome to Tuesday Talks with Gbemi, the first of its kind!!! Today we will be discussing on the basic fundamental human rights of a Nigerian... I'm sure most of us know we have rights as humans in Nigeria but we are not familiar with them or we ignored these rights. We have many fundamental rights as humans but today, we will be discussing just some of them especially the ones that tend to be ignored or easily forgotten.... The first one I'll be talking on is the *right to life*. Everyone has the right to life and no one should be deprived of this intentionally. The only exception to this is if a person is found guilty of a grievous criminal offence and is sentenced to death(section of 33 of the 1999 constitution). Mind you, a person is not guilty of any offence until proved otherwise by the court of law. Another fundamental right is the right to freedom of movement. Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely without restriction. However, this right has been violated in many ways in that people are cautious of moving about for fear of kidnappers or robbery or other violence. We've heard cases of people killed by stray bullets and the likes, thereby violating their rights to life and freedom of movement. There is also the right to dignity of person. According to Section 34 of the 1999 Constitution,  every person is entitled to respect for the dignity of person and accordingly no person shall be subject to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment, no person shall be held in slavery or servitude, no person shall be regarded to perform forced or compulsory labour. Many people have been victims of the slavery, child and human trafficking and all other forms of inhumane activities thereby, violating their rights to live as free persons. Also, sometimes, we might have this snobbish attitude towards others, the "you do not belong in my class and not fit to talk to me" attitude, thereby bullying people and making them feel lesser than they should, bringing down their self esteem. Every individual should be awarded the respect they deserve not looked down upon cause they are not putting on the latest clothes, carrying designers bags or driving the latest cars. The last but not the least  fundamental human right I will be talking about today is the right to freedom of speech and the press. Every individual is entitled to freely express himself/herself either through the press or social media. Also, I think people should be given the chance to express their feelings over a situation without being insulted or harrassed. Allow them talk and speak out their minds. However, the fact that we have the right to express ourselves freely does not create an avenue for insulting others. There have been many cases where in the process of speaking out some people hurt others especially on social media. We should learn to choose our words carefully so that even when we are trying to correct someone or express our feelings, we don't hurt others. Remember, words go along way, they either elevate people or being them down.
That's it for today guys, hope you enjoy the rest of your week and don't forget to drop your comments and contributions at the comment section below.
