SERENA WILLIAMS SUSTAINS INJURY!!! : SPORTS WITH ADEJOH (TENNIS)

"I am beyond disappointed," Serena Williams says

The most anticipated clash of the French Open was called off as Serena Williams had to pull out of the event due to an arm injury.

The phenomenal American was billed to play old foe, Maria Sharapova in the fourth round, but announced her withdrawal shortly before the match.

“I’ve had issues with the right pectoral muscle to the point where I can’t serve. It’s extremely disappointing,” Williams said during a news conference at Roland Garros.

“But also, I made a promise to myself and to my coach and to my team that if I’m not at least 60 percent or 50 percent, then I probably shouldn’t play."

"It is hard to play when I can’t physically serve. I’ve never had this injury before, I’ve never felt it in my life and it was so painful."

“I’m beyond disappointed. I gave up so much from time with my daughter & time with my family all for this moment. So it’s really difficult to be in this situation.”

Russia’s Sharapova said she was looking forward to playing Williams and “disappointed” the American had to withdraw.

“I wish her a speedy recovery and hope she returns to the tour soon,” she said.

Williams has an overwhelming head-to-head record against Maria Sharapova as she's beaten the Russian in 19 of their 21 career meetings. Sharapova's last win against Serena Williams was in 2004.
