SPORTS WITH ADEJOH : (TENNIS)

Hello folks!

I bet a lot of people do not know much about the game of tennis in Nigeria and possibly, around the world. Well, that'll change with time as I'll, steadily, be taking you on quick tours of tournaments in Nigeria and across the globe. Ride here, with me!

Today, 16 May, makes it a month Nigeria's capital city, Abuja came under the spotlight as it played host to three ITF Futures event. The ITF Futures is an entry level for professional tennis players. For three weeks, players from all over the world jostled for $75,000 in prize-money and vital ATP ranking points. The three ITF Futures event, the Tombim Abuja Open, the Dayak Tennis Championship and the GSL Open delivered magical moments, plenty of upsets, and an incredible atmosphere.

Nigerian players sadly, were no match for their foreign counterparts as they all, save for Thomas Otu in the third week, fell in the first round of each of the tourneys.

Exciting times however, are around the corner as the second half of the year promises lots of national tournaments, particularly the NCC Tennis League.

Away from the local scene now, Swiss great, Roger Federer reclaimed the world number one ranking after Rafael Nadal failed to win the Madrid Open last week. The 'King of Clay', Nadal was surprisingly beaten by the 'Prince of Clay', Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals, just a day after setting an incredible record of 50 straight sets without defeat on clay. Shocking, isn't it?

Rafael Nadal will however, take back the top spot if he clinches the Italian Open title this week. The Spanish maestro will be in action against Damir Dzumhur in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome today, Wednesday. Do NOT bet
against him!

Furthermore, women's greatest, Serena Williams hasn't had a good return to competitive tennis since becoming a mother. The 36-year-old pulled out of the Italian Open and is hoping to be fully fit for the French Open which will serve off on the 27th of May. Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, in a recent interview, said that the superstar returned too soon following her pregnancy, but believes the premature return would provide the necessary preparedness for the French Open (Roland Garros), the second of the four Grand Slam events in a calendar year.

Hopefully, the phenomenal American will return to her devastating best and we could once again witness the sheer brilliance of the greatest woman ever to grace a tennis court.

And that's it for now. Be sure to get more of this next time.
