FASHION TABLE WITH STEPHANIE: SMART CASUAL
SMART CASUAL
Smart casual is nowhere near as formal as the business professional style but it requires a certain degree of sophistication above normal casual wear. It's a style that can be your everyday look, so it should be flexible and comfortable enough to adapt to different locations, but it should also be mature.
Like I always emphasize, looking good doesn't have to be a "bank breaking" exercise. You can get expensive items if you want to o, but it's not all that necessary.
I read somewhere that smart casual is "anything smarter than a tracksuit, but less formal than a suit". In general, what should pop into your head when you hear "Smart casual" should be neat chinos, pressed skirt, or a dark pair of jeans with a nice shirt or camisole, a blazer and a pair of leather shoes or heels.
Smart casual is neat, conventional, yet relatively informal in style.”
– Oxford dictionary
Always keep in mind the location and the occasion. If it's for a wedding, guys can just wear a nice pair of chinos with a dress shirt, ditch the tie and dress up your blazer with a pocket square. Ladies can put on a corporate-like jumpsuit with a pair of heels and a clutch purse or a mini bag.
Meanwhile,
If it's for an after work party, a guy could just wear a dark coloured Jean, with a checked shirt. For a lady, a nice wrap top on a jean would work seamlessly.
Your go to wardrobe pieces for mixing and matching should include:
1. Great fitting denim Jeans (preferably dark wash). It could also be a skirt or a little oversized mama's denim trouser for ladies.
2. Chinos in classic colours like khaki, navy, etc.
3. Well fitted Shirts in classic colours. You could have a lot of whites that look good with a few buttons open. Roll the sleeves up for a more relaxed look.
4. Off the shoulder tops
5. Simple sleeveless turtleneck tops
6. Chic sweaters
7. Midi skirts (stretchy and non stretchy)
8. Classic quality blazer
9. Shoes: could be high end sneakers (dress down) or oxford leather shoes or Chelsea boots (dress up). For ladies; block heels, kitten heels, mules, loafers, sneakers too.
10. Wrap dresses or clean cut dresses that don't reveal too much legs in neutral colours.
11. Smart tailored shorts.
12. Bags could include; simple clutch bag, a body bag, a tote bag, a bucket bag, etc. But leave the structured office bag or the casual back pack at home.
When in doubt, go for the more formal option. It’s always better to slightly overdressed than underdressed.
