FASHION TABLE : ARE DARTS REALLY IMPORTANT
Have you ever thought of why most of your clothes come with some sewn in lines. Usually two at the front and two at the back.
Many people hate sewing darts, because they just seam like those "must do" activities that have no relevance.
For the non-sewing clan; "Darts are folds (tucks coming to a point) sewn into fabric to take in ease and provide shape to a garment, especially for a woman's bust". They are used frequently in all sorts of clothing to tailor the garment to the wearer's shape, or to make an innovative shape in the garment.
Without a dart, you see diagonal pull lines from the bust to the side seam. The front just doesn't hang right. The human body is not a cylinder, or a box . A flat (2-dimensional) piece of fabric simply won't adequately cover a 3-dimensional body. Darts control the shape of the fabric and allows the fabric to conform to your body, they can also create style lines that enhance shape and comfort.
Darts aren't just for female apparels alone, they are also used in men's trousers and jackets.
You had no idea why those lines are always there right? Now you know.
We'll talk about how to sew in those darts another day, but from today you know one of the factors that makes that outfit fit so well.
