LIFE AS IT IS: AN EYE!
An Eye
Chapter One
Present
“A child for a child”.
That's what the printed note had said.
I trace my hands across it, letter by letter, word for word and that's when everything came rushing in.
*May 2014*
The first time Sarah met Jeremy Smith, she had just finished high school and had been working in a confectionery shop. In previous years, she had dreamt about going to college, maybe on a scholarship because there was no damm fuckin'way her mother could afford it.
Sarah had lived with her mother, her twin brother and her drunkard of a father and while she had loved being close to her twin, she had prayed every to find a way to live the hellhole she had called a house. She hadn't called it a home, home they said was where the heart was and Sarah heart had left that dump ago. She had been a 'A'student, spending most of time studying probably because she hadn't really friends, but then puberty had hit in and the lanky girl had turn into a woman with all right curves. The boys had swarm in like bees and even though she knew her priority was college, she had been able to resist the attention she got and the pleasure she felt.
And that's how she started flunking her classes, at first she hadn't been able to see it, but then when she had realized her mistakes, it had been too late and the chance of leaving the dump she had been brought up in had passed.
So she started working at the shop, high school was over and most of the people she had partied with were in college probably because their parents could afford it and there she was, working and still going back to the house she had vowed to live.
Her brother had left one day and truthfully she had been bitter about it. He didn't even have the courtesy of saying it to her face, he had left saying he was going to join a group of truckers that drove across the country. Most times, she had wanted to live to and had only stayed because of him. Okay, maybe she would have left if she had a way to survive out there but she wouldn't have gone without talking to him and not in a note.
Then Jeremy had came into the picture, and God's truth, she had knew he was married. Everyone in town knew who Jeremy Smith was and she hadn't been an exception. But it had felt so good to be seen.
He hadn't been flirting with her. He had came to the shop once in a while, mostly whenever he was going home from work and he would stop by to buy ice cream for his daughters. She knew he had gotten married to his high school sweetheart and they had five daughters together. And whenever he stopped by, he would engage her in a conversation while she carried out his orders and for those moments, she felt cherished that someone was concerned about her well being, someone wanted to know how she was doing and it made her feel good and then started to fantasize; how it was her he was coming home to and their kids he was buying things for.
It was all she spent most of her days doing, fantasizing about him and on a particular Saturday, her fantasy turn to reality.
