Can Serena Williams finally clinch her 24th Grand Slam title?
Action at Wimbledon has reached its second week and some of the top seeds are still in contention for both the men's and women's singles title.
In the women's field, 37-year-old Serena Williams is on track for an eight Wimbledon title and a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam crown. The great American is also seeking her first Grand Slam title since her Australian Open triumph in 2017, while she was pregnant. She returned from maternity leave in 2018 and made back-to-back Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, losing to Angelique Kerber and young Japanese, Naomi Osaka, respectively.
Good for Serena now, the woman who denied her an eight title in last year's final, Angelique Kerber has already been knocked out. Can she now power through?
The 37-year-old has come through her section of the women's draw with the loss of just a set. Having defeated Italy's Giulia Gatto-Monticone 6-2, 7-5 in the first round, Williams came from behind to behind Slovenia's Kaja Juvan 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, before powering past 18th seed, Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round.
Up next for the American is 30th seed, Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain on Monday. Should Williams get past the Spaniard, then she will face her toughest test yet in a blockbuster quarter-final showdown against top seed Ashleigh Barty, who's seeking a second consecutive Grand Slam title, that's provided Barty beats Serena's compatriot, Alison Riske in the fourth round. Barty has played incredibly well so far, breezing into the second week without dropping a set.
However, Williams possesses an incredible array of skills on grass, boasts qualities and strength that are quite unmatched and whenever she's playing well, she becomes near-impossible to beat. She's reached the final here thrice in the last four years, winning two (2015 & 2016). Missed 2017 because she was pregnant and fell in the final in 2018, just after maternity leave.
Can she go one better this this time?
