For the first time in the history of Nigerian football the incumbent President of the Nigerian football federation Mr Amaju Pinnick under the watchful eyes of local and international observers retained his seat as he was re-elected to run the affairs of the federation for another 4 years from 2018 through to 2022. Mr Pinnick emerged victorious in the September 20 polls held in Kastina after securing 34 of a possible 44 votes in a landslide victory over his 3 other opponents and has since been congratulated by the FIFA president Gianni Infantino on the achievement of securing re-election.
The UEFA Champions league returned after the off season during the week and my did it return with everything we have come to know the competition for. The season was kick-started with a total whitewash of PSV Eindhoven 4-0 by Barcelona a game which saw Lionel Messi bag his 8 career hat trick in European competition, Inter scored twice in the final 6 minutes of their game with Tottenham to secure their first victory over the London club at their home ground (San siro). Later on Liverpool won the battle of the world’s best attacks by edging PSG 3-2 at anfield as they treated fans to a 5 goal thriller with Roberto Firmino grabbing the winner in the dying minutes of the game after PSG had fought their way back from 2 goals down.
Elsewhere, Juventus and Cristiano Ronaldo had their great love affair soured when the Portuguese captain received his marching orders in the 31st minute of their tie against Valencia. A frustrated Ronaldo left the pitch in tears realising what a step back his first champions league red card was to him and his team in a competition we have come to know as the 33 year olds stomping ground. Juventus held on to win the game 0-2 after 2 penalties were converted by Bosnian Miralem Pjanic with Valencia’s Dani Parejo failing to score from the spot for the Spaniards.
