HAMZ MUSINGS: Capacity & Capability

CAPACITY AND CAPABILITY.

A very beautiful morning to you thought leaders, Welcome on board to Hamz's Musings this bright Thursday morning.
What are you doing at the moment? What are you seeking for now?. Pause! And ask yourself this question; Are you ready or can you keep it if it eventually come at your disposal?
That's why we shall be talking on Capacity and Capability today.
So, grab yourself a sit and get ready to be educated.

You see, People often make the mistake of asking for things they have not built the capacity to keep. It is like a teacup asking for a tanker full of blessing. It is not likely to get it. Not by a long chance. If you are a teacup in ability, you will get a teacup-size blessing. That is what you can handle. That is what you can keep. And that is what you will get. If you get more than that, ultimately, it would come to waste.

Last Night, while on the Internet conducting my usual research, I read about two folks that left an indelible impression on me till this very moment [ Adams  and James Altucher ].

- Evelyn Adams achieved something extremely rare in life. She won the lottery. Twice. In two consecutive years. 1985 and 1986. She won a total of $5.4 million. Calculating that amount and relating it to today’s equivalent, we may come up to as much as $25million. In Naira, that would be about 9 billion. To make you have a sense of a billion, let us do a small calculation. If you were born today, and you start spending N200,000 every single day of your life, you would be 54 years before you would be through spending that money. That’s one billion- not nine billion. And that’s assuming that you don’t invest any single thing. Evelyn Adams, however, managed to spend all that money and, by 2012, she was living in a trailer.

You see, You are not likely to receive what you have not the capacity to keep. If you do, you will eventually fritter it away. Now, how about the reverse? If you have a tanker-capacity, if you receive less than that, there is a higher likelihood that you multiply what you possess until you reach full capacity.

- James Altucher created a web-design company, Reset Inc. in 1996. Two years later, he sold it for $10 million. He moved to make a series of investments which went south. Within 2 years, he had lost every single dime he had as a result of bad investments exacerbated by the tech bubble of 2000. He was badly burned. And he nearly committed suicide. He has started about 20 companies in all, and all but 3 survived. He failed at an astronomical 17 of them. Where is Altucher now? He has published 11 books and one of them, CHOOSE YOURSELF, was judged by USA Today as among the 12 Best Business Books of All Time. In 2006, he founded the financial social network StockPickr which has been named among Time Magazine’s 50 Best Websites of 2007. That same year, he sold the website for $10 million. He is the Managing Director of Formula Capital, an asset management firm. He was a seed investor in Buddy Media which sold for $745 million. He has made back his fortune several times over as a hedge fund manager, popular blogger and podcaster.

You see?, You cannot keep a man of capacity down once he is decided to not stay down. One way or another, he will find a way to fill up his capacity. It is much the same way that a person without capacity cannot keep up with more than he can handle, no matter how much and how many times you give him. One way or another, he will find a way to fritter it away until he has reached a stage he is mentally comfortable with.
There are many who exist who are not mentally comfortable with wealth. So they find a way to become poor again, one way or another.
There exist people who are mentally uncomfortable with happy relationships. So they find one way or another to mess it up.
There are people who are mentally uncomfortable with a healthy sense of self-esteem. So you could give them all the external affirmation in the world. As long as they refuse to internalise it, they would keep acting in ways consistent with their poor sense of self-worth.
Some people can perform admirably well in certain positions. And so you give them higher responsibility and they begin to underperform, or perhaps, make some really terrible and costly errors.

Often times, people say they have changed. But that isn’t the truth. As a matter of fact, the truth is the exact opposite. They did NOT change. And it is precisely as a result of this reason that they have not acted in consonance with expectations. They have not increased in capacity. They remained exactly the same. And the level of capacity that made them handle very well a smaller position isn’t exactly the level of capacity that would enable them handle a higher position.
Capacity. Ability. Power. Dunamis
