Novak Djokovic stuns Roger Federer to make history
After not only beating the undesirable effects of inclement weather, but also, posting impressive results all week Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer clashed in the final of the Cincinnati Open for the fourth time. For Djokovic, though, it was his sixth final at the event. He had lost all previous five — three to Federer, who, by contrast, had won all eight finals he'd played in.
The Swiss maestro was the favourite, he was gunning for an historic eight Cincinnati Open title. Djokovic, had the odds stacked against him.
The Cincinnati Open was the only event in all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments that Djokovic was yet to clinch. A win would ensure that the 31-year-old Serb achieves the Career Golden Masters. And win did he!
The super Serb put up an exceptionally brilliant performance to dispatch Roger Federer in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-4 to secure his first ever Cincinnati Open title and become the first man in history to achieve the Career Golden Masters.
“It’s a very special moment,” he said. “It’s the first time I get to stand with a winning trophy in Cincinnati.”
“I’ve played five finals before and most of those I’ve lost to this great man. Thank you Roger for letting me win once here!”
Djokovic will now look to take his form into the US Open —the last Grand Slam of the year— which starts on 27 August, having previously won two titles at Flushing Meadows.
