Team Nigeria off to blistering start in Davis Cup opener

The incredible quartet of Sylvester Emmanuel, Christian Paul, Joseph Imeh and Abdulmumin Babalola got Nigeria off to an excellent start in their bid to secure promotion to Africa Zone Group II as they hammered Rwanda 3-0 at the Nairobi Club in Kenya.

20-year-old Sylvester Emmanuel put the team on the front foot with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Ernest Habiyambere in the first singles rubber, while Nigeria's number one player, Joseph Imeh needed just 48 minutes to wrap up the second singles rubber as he pummeled the Rwandan team captain, Olivier Havugimana 6-0, 6-1.

In the third rubber, which is the doubles, Joseph Imeh combined brilliantly with Christian Paul to claim a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hamissi Gatete and Etienne Niyigena, ending the day on a high and atop Pool A.

The Nigerian team will next face West African neighbour, Cameroon, who were beaten 2-1 by Benin Republic.

In Pool B, table toppers, Kenya secured their second win of the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Mozambique, while Namibia bounced back from an first tie defeat to Algeria to claim a 2-1 victory over Uganda.

Teams will have to finish in the top two of their pools to have any chance of advancing to Group II. The winner of Pool A will play the runner-up in Pool B, with the winner of Pool B facing a tussle against the runner-up in Pool A. The final two teams will be promoted.

The Davis Cup, also known as the World Cup of Tennis, is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format.

Also known as the Tennis World Cup, the Davis Cup comprises the World Group, World Group Play-offs, Group I, Group II, Group III, & Group IV in descending order, and Nigeria's best performances have been semifinal finishes in the Europe/Africa Zone Group I, in 1988 and 1989
