Grace David's Corner: Liberty a series

LIBERTY ;
A series from the stables of prolific writer Grace David
EPISODE ONE
The choking smell of urine mixed with tobacco filled her mind and slowed her thinking process. Where was she and how had she gotten here? Then she remembered and wished she hadn’t woken up. Now the men were staring at her with nothing more than disdain and scorn. A dry chuckle made her snap her head up and the chills running down her spine were undeniable.
Hagar moved towards her with slow deliberate steps, her lean frame shrouded in a tie and dye caftan, its pattern a little distracting. She abandoned the stub of the cigarette between her fingers and lit another one; it was only after she had taken one long pull that she spoke.
“My dear girl when will you ever learn, you think that I would be running a business like this without eyes and ears everywhere?” another long aggravating pull of the cigarette and she turned to face Aladdin, her one eared stalwart who had just walked in looking as he always looked – chilly.
“How is her accomplice?” Hagar asked.
He shrugged, “singing hallelujah to the Lord in heaven as we speak,”
Chinny choked on dry tears and an overwhelming sense of loss, he had promised to help her escape this hell and had paid with his life. How unfortunate, how unfair that life always gave evil the upper hand and those who were advocates of good got bitten without being avenged.
Hagar cackled and turned to face her again, “hear that? Thank your stars that I like you, your life wouldn’t have cost me more than a bullet, I wonder why I keep you when your reluctance to settle down is highly repulsive?”
Chinny did the unthinkable she spoke back, “then let me go,”
The expression on Hagar’s face changed from amused to murderous, “I will let you go alright, right after I tear that womb of yours out, yes that fertile ground of yours that keeps breeding unwanted seeds,”
At Chinny’s horrified look she laughed, “The silly girl doesn’t even know that she is pregnant,” she turned to her stalwart as if expecting him to join in the laughter, but he didn’t even blink.
“Hag should we handle it as usual?” He asked instead.
Hagar gave it a little thought before shaking her head with a mischievous glint in her eyes as she drawled, “it will be fun to watch her spit and wobble around, sort of like an anchor, now her spindly legs will find it difficult to carry her.”
“Buh no be bad business be that one?”
“Says who? Every man that ever shared her bed will pay to keep the result of their escapade silent, babies are a big deal now you know,”
The rage inside Chinny burst forth like a dam that had reached its limit and she screamed, “You wicked witch, I will kill you the first chance I get, you better kill me now if you still love your miserable excuse of a life.”
A haunting silence followed her declaration as Hagar took time to let it all sink in, then she deliberately took time corking the pistol in her left hand.
“Who am I to refuse such an advice?” she smirked raising the gun.
As the cool lead rested between her two eyes she shut them expecting it to be quick and painless if she was lucky. But has she ever been lucky!
